AUCTION REVIEW BRIGHTWELLS, TIMED ONLINE. CLOSED 6 DECEMBER

Minimal-mile Ford flies past its estimate at Brightwells’ season-closer – and there were plenty of other good deals for the bargain hunters, too

One of the most intriguing lots in Brightwells’ final sale of the year was a 1985

Ford Capri 2.0S showing 1938 miles from new that had been garaged for three decades. The £25- 30k estimate was swept asunder as it thundered on to £35,700.

A 1969 Aston Martin DBS Vantage in seasonally-appropriate red looked intriguing. The three-owner example had no pre-2004 history when the vendor bought it, since when it had covered 3000 miles. Presentable but ripe for re-commissioning and cosmetic attention it was away at £41,600.

In the same vein came a 1973 Jensen Interceptor. An estate sale after 42 years ownership it had been lightly restored in 1989, showed 49,800 miles and while in need of re-commissioning after being off the road since 2017, made a top-class buy at £19,350.

Not to be out-pointed by their Newport Pagnell and West Bromwich rivals a pair of Jaguar saloons found new homes, with a sympathetically restored and now nicely patinated Jaguar Mk IV 3.5-litre saloon a tip-top buy at £16,077. For those of a later Jag saloon persuasion a 1974 XJ6 in rarer SWB guise was well bought at £3350.

ABrightwells classic sale can be the go-to for anyone wanting a classic Land Rover and this one delivered the goods – a 1976 109” pick-up sold for a £5300 and a 1980 example £6400. A 1962 Land Rover 88” Carawagon, meanwhile, cost its new owner £9650.

Looking to manufacturers further afield a former historic rally 1970 Datsun 240Z returned to fast road use offered true old-school rear-wheel-drive action and sold for £22,100. If that was too dear a 1985 Porsche 944 Lux with long MoT served up festive value aplenty at £3000.

1984 FORD CAPRI 2.0S

The story of this car’s first disgruntled owner and his correspondence with the chairman of Ford GB made an interesting back story to this Capri and went a long way towards explaining why it showed just 1938 miles from new.

Dissatisfied with its build quality the owner locked it away for 30 years and it passed to a family member upon his death. Owned by the vendor since 2018 and kept in a bubble since it came with a history file that included an MoT-test until next October.

1972 AUSTIN 1300 4-DOOR

This lovely 28,000-mile, three-owner example was a case in point. With its first owner, a Miss Roberts of West Ewell, for 30 years, the car arrived at Brightwells in ‘very sound original order’, the auctioneer s
