AUCTION REVIEW CCA, WARWICKSHIRE EVENT CENTRE. 9 DECEMBER

A 20-strong collection helped CCA’s last sale of 2023 generate strong bids across cars of all ages and conditions

CCA’s 2023 curtain-closer was boosted by the 20-strong Stonegate collection of project cars that featured several Mercedes-Benz R129 SLs plus others including a 1996 Aston Martin DB6. The collection also included a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette 427 ‘big block’ convertible with a manual gearbox. Estimated at £25- 30k it was away for more double the upper estimate at £68,625.

Elsewhere, a no-reserve1981 Morris Ital 1.3HL that had covered just 4548 miles from new and looked great throughout went for £5288.

In the old-school rear-wheel-drive camp came a 1973 Capri RS3100 (£54-64k) that made £54,562 while a 1974 Escort Mexico from long-term storage and requiring detailing (£25- 30k) was bought for £40,500. Bringing the Escort lineage more up-to-date a 2859-mile 1988 XR3i slid under its £25-30k estimate at £22,500.

Those keen to see how just how well the fewer-than-1000-miles 1997 Probe 24v would fare were in for a disappointment because, like several other cars in the sale, it was merely marked as ‘sold’.

Among the Jaguars a 1968 340 sold for £14,062, a 1973 roadster for £46,125 and the Squadron Blue 1978 XJ6 4.2 was perhaps the best buy at a bargain £4275. MGs got a look-in too, with an extremely smart and sensibly modified 1974 GT selling for £13,050 against a £10-12k estimate.

There was even plenty of choice for those whose tastes venture beyond the English Channel. First lot of the sale, a 1970 Fiat- OSCA 1600S Cabriolet ready for re-commissioning/restoration (£10- 12k) had enough kudos to make £20,250. A 1985 Alpina B10 (£20- 25k) and recently re-painted made £17,437. More affordable but utterly enchanting nonetheless, a 1989 Volkswagen Polo ‘bread van’ was a wise buy for someone at £2137.

1974 MGB GT

OK, it wasn’t an especially early example or a very late, ultra low-mileage model, but this three-owner Citron Yellow GT had plenty in its favour. It had three owners from new, was with the vendor from 2012 and showed 50,700 miles from new. Said to be stunningly restored, lifting the bonnet revealed an Aldon Automotive Stage 2 engine that featured a balanced flywheel and crank and the suspension had been polybushed. It looked great throughout and all of the work had been done – why take on a project and all of the attendant grief that such cars often bring with them when this was a ready-made solution? You wouldn’t lose it in a car park, either…

1996 ASTON MARTIN DB7

This early DB7 formed part of the Stoneacre Collection of projects and was offered at no reserve. It had seen very little use lately but was said to run and drive and boasted Ast
