Record-breakers display joins MG, Monthléry and Dakar celebrations at packed Paris classic event

A dazzling display of Renault’s record-breakers – including one of the fastest aeroplanes of the 1930s – starred at a packed Rétromobile show in Paris.

The five-day classic show in the French capital included a celebration of MG’s centenary, as reported in last week’s ClassicCarWeekly, but also drew plenty of support from other manufacturers keen to show off the stars of their heritage collections.

Citroën and Peugeot were curiously absent from this year’s event but Renault’s stand brought together six classics used in period for breaking records ranging from a 1926 40CV to a 1961 Dauphine driven at Bonneville back in 2016. The event also included displays from Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen among other manufacturers, along with exhibitions focusing on the Dakar Rally and Monthléry’s centenary.

Thousands of enthusiasts from around Europe – including many from the UK – headed to the city’s Expo Porte de Versailles to check out more than 1000 classics.

Show director Romain Grabowski told ClassicCarWeekly: ‘Time goes by and trends change but the mission of Rétromobile remains unaltered – to gather and unite people and bring to life our shared passion for what was the major invention of the 19th century – the automobile.

‘Clubs, manufacturers, dealers, parts sellers, restorers and insurers are among the 550 exhibitors who have taken up the invitation to come and be part of this year’s event. We have also united around some of the finest chapters in the history of the automobile, including the centenaries of both MG and Monthléry.’
