RACE RETRO SPECIAL

David Simister looks at the cars to keep an eye on at Iconic’s sale this weekend

There’ll be plenty of sideways action on Race Retro’s famous rally stages this weekend but some of the more spectacular moments are likely to happen at the event’s classic sale, where Iconic Auctioneers will be putting more than 100 mouth-watering machines under the auctioneer’s gavel.

The sale is split into two parts, with race- and rally-prepared classics changing hands on Friday (23 Febraury), with significant entries including an ex-Richard Burns Peugeot 309 GTI rally car, a Toyota Celica GT formerly campaigned by Martin Brundle and a Ford Capri 3.0S previously raced by Gerry Marshall and Graham Scarborough.

Saturday’s follow-up is dedicated to road-going classics, including Rowan Atkinson’s Land Rover Defender, one of the first E-types off Jaguar’s production line and a Lotus Elan Plus 2 that Colin Chapman gave to Forumla One driving star Ronnie Peterson to use as his personal car.

The Stoneleigh Park sale has yielded some big results in previous years; last year’s outing included a record £164,250 that was bid in order to secure a Lotus Elan driven by Diana Rigg in the TV series The Avengers and an eye-opening £590,500 that was needed to bag a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.

Here are a few of the cars that have caught our eye from this year’s sale…
