Motor Vehicle Registration Numbers of Great Britain 1974-2001 £17.99

This isn’t going to win any awards for witty titles but it does cover the title matter – car registrations right up to the last ‘Y’-prefix plates – very comprehensively, clocking in at 219 pages. Jonathan Del Mar divides the guidance into localised listings illustrated with more than 600 images of classics bearing the corresponding registrations (we didn’t know, for instance, that the six-wheeled Range Rover fire tender at Brooklands Museum is Gloucester-registered). There’s also a helpful series of appendices showing you all of the index markers for all of the local offices that issued registration numbers, details of how to spot exports to the EU and a rundown of diplomatic and irregular registrations. We often use it and its prequel – covering 1963-1974 plates – to check car registration details in CCW and can vouch for it being a useful tool, and you can get both books as a bundle for £30.
