AUCTION REVIEW

HAMPSON AUCTIONS, BOLESWORTH CASTLE. 17 MARCH

Estimate-busting 911 Turbo takes the top spot in Cheshire – but it was doted-on Fifties classics that provided some of this sale’s best buys

The top price at Hampson’s first sale of the year was achieved by a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo that was estimated at £80-100k but was off to a new home for £103,500.

Its price outpointed a 2013 Ferrari California 30 and a same-year Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, which were away for £48,375 and £95,625 respectively. A 2005 Aston Martin DB9 V12 was a bargain at just £21,375.

Not all punters were in need of such startling performance, and a range of more traditional classics slaked the thirst of those so-inclined. A fine 1953 Ford Prefect that had been in one family’s ownership for almost 50 years had a sensible £3-5k estimate and was snapped up for £3825. A charming, older-restoration 1950 MG YA was a tip-top buy at £6975.

The 1965 Fiat 850 was an unusual, affordable offering; rarely seen in classic auctions the UK-market example needed some tidying-up but there was much to like. It was a canny buy at £2138.

Staying with older offerings but in a more performance vein, a pair of Austin-Healeys found new homes; a 1959 100/6 (£30-35k) made £32,625, and a 1960 3000 was away for £26,438.

1950 MG Y-TYPE

Here was a cracking route into 1950s British saloon ownership. Coming from 43 years’ ownership (with two previous owners) this older-restoration car had enjoyed plenty of work over the years, including body restoration and paint and an engine that was rebuilt eight years ago. Vendor-described as ‘good’ all round, it was pleasing to behold – and just that little bit different.

1991 LADA RIVA

Unmissable, having done just 12,000 miles. In one family’s ownership until 2009 it changed hands eight years later and went into storage. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but it was in g
