AUCTION REVIEW

H&H CLASSICS, IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM, DUXFORD. 13 MARCH

There was a strong mix of classics in H&H’s inaugural outing of the year, with high-end projects and continental charmers pulling ahead

As is always the case at H&H, the classic mash-up worked well, with a Renault 16TS and a later Avantime adding some left-field Gallic charm.

But for those preferring something more cheddar cheese than camembert, a 1934 Austin 7 van drew £9562 from one Duxford punter while an older-restoration 1921 Morgan Grand Prix was off to a new home for £23,750.

Bentley specials, and especially those based on MkVI and R-type models, will always see a conflict of views; some approve of tired, rusty examples living on while others see them as the devil incarnate. Those with the former view were the sort who would willingly have bid on the 1954 Bentley R-type Halse special, one of 16 built in the 1970s and fitted with a Rolls-Royce straight eight, and a Bentley S2 Continental automatic that was away for £46,125. On the more exotic front a 1975 Lamborghini Espada offered true jet-set grand touring for £79,500 while a no-reserve, barn-find 1978 Ferrari 308 GT4 cost its new owner £23,625.

Down in the cheap(er) seats a 1991 Rover Metro Clubman three-door (ex-JLR Collection, 17,545 miles) was possibly unrepeatable at £2250. A 1948 Morris 8 with Brockhouse camping trailer that had been offered by another auction house last year was also off to a new home; the perky apple green combination sold for £3375.

1962 BENTLEY S2

The S-series and its Silver Cloud sibling continue to offer decent value for money, and this older-restoration S2 (the first V8-engined Bentley) was definitely worth a punt. The body was good, the grey-over-Sand paint was fine and the interior – thought to be largely original – looked decent. The engine and gearbox had apparently had some work done to them but, it was noted, there was a light ticking from the engine. Coming with plenty of
