Motorsport UK’s StreetCar series is a great entry into competitive driving without pushing your car to the limit

While we often highlight the chance to go rallying or racing with a classic in these pages, there’s no hiding the expense associated with that – from preparing your car to transporting it, fuelling it, mending it and getting a full racing licence. But there is a cheaper way to enjoy the fun of motor sport with your classic without having to rig it out with rain lights and fire extinguishers – it’s called StreetCar.

Designed to allow even beginner drivers to participate in entry-level motor sport disciplines with their road cars, its an open to all series that incorporates various forms of motor sport, all of which can be enjoyed in an unmodified everyday car and with an RS Clubman racing licence, which is free of charge and available within a few simple clicks on Motorsport UK’s website.

Once you’ve got your license, there are several different styles of event that you can take part in. Autotesting is the most straightforward of the bunch incorporating the familiar concept of driving a pre-determined route between cones and through gates testing your car’s handling and your own car control. The most entry level of these, AutoSolo, doesn’t even require reversing and takes places on sealed surfaces.

The standard Autotest series is a little more demanding with J-turns and handbrakes a common feature on the loose surface tests. Even so it’s less Safari rally, more neatly trimmed stubble field, soft grass or loose gravel; you won’t need mud tyres or anything like that but you will need a keen memory to recall the pattern that you’re expected to drive.
