Enthusiasts embrace voluntary tests

We asked what you thought of one CCW reader’s proposal for specialist-led inspections instead of MoTs – and many of you think it’s a good idea

A proposal for classics to be given ‘non-MoT’ inspections in lieu of government-backed tests has met with a positive reaction from owners.

Geoff Fry’s ‘non-MoT’ approach of annually taking his MGB – which is exempt from MoTs on account of its age – to a classic specialist was highlighted in our 28 February issue, following an incident in which police in Essex seized an MoT-exempt Austin Allegro due to its poor overall condition,

He said: ‘I take my Oselli-tuned fast-road MGB roadster to the local garage that MoTs my modern vehicles where it is given an MoT-standard check for brakes, steering, suspension, etc. – anything that could compromise the safety of the vehicle on the public roads.

‘I pay a £50 ‘fee’ and the garage gives me a dated receipt listing the work carried out.’

Readers who voiced their support for the approach included Gary Flinn, who told Classic Car Weekly: ‘I have been a long time classic car owner and have continued to get my classic MoT tested since 2018 more for peace of mind and to ensure that I would have some proof that the car was roadworthy when last tested within the last 12-month period should the worst happen while I’m driving my classic and I was involved in a major accident.

‘The proof of recent MoT testing should help with any issues with the police or my insurance company should I be in the unfortunate situation of the car being written off or needing serious expense to keep it on the road.’

Bristol 401 owner Colin Lewis said: ‘I think that a voluntary approach by owners to make arrangements with a local trusted garage for the non-MoT test described, and the introduction of an MoT test designed specifically for classic cars is time and money very well spent indeed.
