The nec show stars we wanted to take home

1964 TRIUMPH HERALD PICK-UP

Spencer Norman’s Herald had its first public outing after a four-year restoration. It started life as a 1200 Estate model that originally belonged to his father, and when the time came to put it back on the road after more than 30 years, he vowed to do something different with it. Specialists took care of some of the more involved chassis repairs and paintwork, but the conversion is all Spencer’s own work – and while he’s at it, he’s treated it to a twin-carb engine sourced from a Spitfire 1500, and a rear window from a caravan. It’s a neatly executed restoration that got people talking – and that’s what the show’s all about.

1978 ASTON MARTIN V8 SALOON

Madarin Yellow – because we know that’s what you’re wondering. Owner Andrew Fawkes explained that it’s estimated only eight V8 Astons were ever produced in this colour with only two remaining; Andrew’s and another in Australia. You may even recognise it – it appeared in Aston Martin’s 110 years celebration parade at Silverstone during last year’s British Formula One race weekend.

Prior to Andrew’s ownership the V8 was upgraded to Vantage spec while the work that he’s carried out includes resealing the underside, restuffing the seats (the foam for which had disintegrated quite spectacularly) and replacing the door cappings.

1986 VAUXHALL CAVALIER SRI

My father had an estate SRI back in the 1980s, and I loved the perfomance of the powerful Cavalier. You don’t see many of these saloons any more, especially one that has covered a mere 4000 miles since 1990. Neil Moore bought the car from new and did 40,000 miles in the first four years before preserving it in his garage and taking it for the odd trip and annual MoT. It’s a real timewarp Cavalier, needing only a little surface corrosion attending to in order to make it look virtually new. Neil told me that it drives as tight as it did when new and that it can still keep up with modern traffic easily.

I’d love to have been
