40,000 MILES 40 COUNTRIES ,ONE UNIQUE ADVENTURE

This book’s three authors set off from London in September 1969 to attempt the longest land journey ever made – more than 40,000 miles through 40 countries, encountering challenging terrain and political unrest.

Their vehicle was a 1964 109in Series IIA Land Rover, TEN 423, a former utility company vehicle prepared by Copthorne Garage in Sussex. On the side was the wording ‘UNATREK – The Europe-Asia-Africa Overland Expedition 1960-1970’ – with a map of the route (proposed and actual) on the rear door. The Land Rover’s contents were chosen carefully and included a letter from Castrol theoretically enabling them to obtain free products, heavy-duty car batteries from Oldham, a range of Holts motoring accessories and Uniroyal off-road tyres. This is a great record of an amazing journey that could not be repeated today featuring more than 270 photographs, documents and press cuttings with some contemporary memories from the intrepid trio.
