Dexys have announced their first studio album of all new material in more than a decade.

The Feminine Divine will be the band’s sixth studio LP and is set to be released via 100% Records on 28 July. It’ll be the group’s first major release since 2016’s covers album Let The Record Show: Dexys Do Irish And Country Soul, which peaked at No.10 in the UK. Their last LP of original songs was the No.13-charting One Day I’m Going To Soar in 2012.

Fans had their first taster of the album in early April with the release of lead single I’m Going To Get Free. “After taking some time out to refocus his energy, Kevin Rowland came back to music with a fresh perspective and new-found positivity,” said a band statement. “A personal, if not strictly autobiographical, record portraying a man whose views have evolved over time. Not just on women, but the whole concept of masculinity he had been raised with.”

According to the band, the single tells the story of a character attempting to sort out their mental health issues and opt for a more positive outlook on life. “The character is optimistically breaking free from internalised trauma, depression and guilt,” explained frontman Rowland.

The Feminine Divine has been written by Rowland in collaboration with Sean Read, Mike Timothy and original Dexys trombonist Big Jim Paterson and is produced by long-time collaborator Pete Schwier with Toby Chapman.
