Celebrating their 20th anniversary, TV star and podcast queen Giovanna Fletcher tells Closer’s Katie Banks how humour is at the heart of her romance with husband Tom, and why she won’t try for a girl!
They met a whopping 25 yearsago when they both started at the Sylvia Young Theatre School – and Giovanna Fletcher admits her relationship with McFly star husband Tom has stood the test of time because they’ve grown up together.
Tom said recently, “Fate brought us together in assembly on her first day of school… as soon as she came down and sat next to me, I kinda knew.”
Now, celebrating their 20th anniversary together, she beams, “It’s crazy to think we met when we were 13 and have been together for 20 years. We passed the point a long time ago that we’ve known each other longer than we’ve not known each other. Once we tipped over that point, we just said, ‘Wow! Our lives are so intertwined, who we are is so intertwined’.

Tom, 37, hit the big time as the lead singer in boyband McFly in 2004 and has subsequently become a best-selling children’s author. Giovanna started off as a YouTube vlogger and in 2020 won I’m A Celeb!. She now hosts award-winning podcasts, Happy Mum, Happy Baby, and Disney’s Journey To The Magic. But despite their huge success and army of followers, Giovanna says keeping their relationship down-to-earth is essential.
She laughs, “Once, when we were in Disneyland, we found this Christmas hat with ‘Grumpy’ on it and a matching mug. And we went through a period of time when if one was grumpy, we’d say, ‘Guess who’s drinking out of the Grumpy mug when we get home!’ and when we got home, we’d have to sit with the hat on, drinking out of the Grumpy mug.
“It was great for getting rid of the tension.
And it made you think, ‘Yes, I am being a tw*t. It’s not you, I’m frustrated about this or that.’ And then you can actually talk about it in a much healthier way by adding some humour into the situation.”
Now Giovanna, 40 – who shares Buzz, nine, Buddy, seven, and Max, four, with Tom – says she loves having three boys and isn’t tempted to try for a girl. “I’m not having any more kids,” says the TV star. “I feel so lucky to have the three that I’ve got. It’s a proper crew. Another mum said to me recently, ‘You have to go into another pregnancy thinking it’s highly likely to be another boy.’ It wouldn’t bother me at all but I feel very set and happy with my lot now.
