When Rebekah Carmichael brought another man back to the home she shared with her boyfriend, he wasn’t at all threatened – because the other man, Rupert, is a ghost.
It was an unusual set-up, but Rebekah, 32, says it became quite normal for them to hang around with Rupert, who
served as a British soldier in the 1700s. She says, “Not everyone gets it, but I love my connection to the spiritual world, which started when I was just three. I feel lucky to be a chosen one. Life certainly isn’t boo-ring!”
HAUNTED
Rebekah was just a child when she started experiencing communications from the spirit world. But it was when she moved to one of America’s most haunted towns, Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2018, that her abilities presented on a whole new level. Rebekah, who runs ghost tours, says, “Everywhere I went, phantoms would follow and sometimes it was impossible to tell, on an energetic level, just who was a real person and who was a ghost.
“At first, I was terrified, but once I realised they meant no harm, I embraced my gift and opened my heart to new friendships. Then when I met Rupert in 2019, outside one of the town’s oldest houses, I was beyond thrilled. He’s one of the clearest spirits that I’ve ever met.”
The fact that Rebekah had a boyfriend didn’t daunt this haunt, and Rupert pursued her. Rebekah and Rupert began speaking daily, but as their friendship developed over the months, a different side of him began to emerge.
Rebekah recalls, “He’d say things like, ‘Your boyfriend should be walking you home, what kind of man is he?’ and I’d angrily have to tell him that he couldn’t just turn up and put his standards on a man in the 21st century! He was becoming jealous of my relationship so I had to distance myself from him for a while.”
But when they reconnected some months later, Rupert had a shocking confession. Rebekah explains, “He apologised and said, ‘I’m sorry, I was angry because you were my wife in my previous lifetime’. My jaw nearly hit the floor. Suddenly it dawned on me that Rupert had occasionally made strange comments about me looking and sounding different.
“I did a professional past-life regression and it revealed Rupert was telling the truth – we’d been man and wife in a past life. Thankfully, my boyfriend was totally cool with it all and the two settled their differences and became good friends. We’d have movie nights together as a trio, and Rupert really relaxed with us.
