CLOSER NEWS REPORT

The hashtag ‘#snatched jawline’ has notched up 210 million views on TikTok. But Closer talks to two women who paid a high price for the latest must-have look…

Scrolling throughher phone, Mary Jones paused on a photo of Sharon Osbourne and sighed. At 71, Sharon looked years younger, with a chiselled jawline and no hint of dropping jowls and the thickening under the chin that 51-year-old Mary had, which she felt aged her.

It was the reason that Mary flew to Turkey to get an SMAS face lift, which particularly targets the jowls and sagging in the cheeks. But the decision haunts her. Far from coming back looking fresh-faced and youthful, she was left with infected skin and is now scarred for life.

SELF-CONSCIOUS

Mary, a carer who’s single and lives in Edinburgh, explains, “I felt self-conscious about ageing, especially since I’d been out and got chatting to a man who put my age at 60. My sister is three years older than me but looked years younger. On social media, it seemed as though everyone else was ageing so much better than me, and I felt under huge pressure to keep up.

“I’d had a few tweakments – spending around £5,000 on Botox, fillers and facials in the last 10 years – but they didn’t seem to help. I particularly felt it around my neck and chin area – my jawline had all but disappeared. Sharon Osbourne particularly stood out for me – she was so chiselled and I wanted to be like her.”

In her quest to get a defined jawline, Mary spent £6,000 to have SMAS face lift surgery at a Turkish clinic at the end of March this year, and was planning a big reveal for her 51st birthday in April.

Unfortunately, it didn’t go to plan as, on her birthday, she was in hospital. She explains, “When I got home my wounds started weeping. A hole opened up and there was green stuff leaking out. It was horrific. I went to the doctor first and was given antibiotics, but it got worse. In the end I went to urgent care about a week after I got home and was sent to hospital with skin necrosis. I had to stay in for two nights on a drip.

HORRIFIC

“I don’t know what went wrong – I suspect they pulled my skin too tight. Whatever the reason, I’ve been left with horrific scars and no other surgeon will operate on me to correct it as they don’t want to risk it. I wish I’d never done it.”

The quest for perfection is booming despite the risks – cosmetic surgery procedures have risen by 102 per cent in the last year, according to figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). And TikTok is flooded with different ways to get the latest sought-after look – dubbed the “snatched jaw
