Soon after her 18th birthday Joanne Prophet had a boob job, and since then she’s had countless tweakments and procedures to get her dream look. But it almost landed her in big trouble…
Sitting in a stark room in a Turkish airport surrounded by six customs officers, Joanne Prophet had never been so terrified.
The 28-year-old mum-of-two thought she was about to be taken to prison. Her crime? They thought she was travelling on a fake passport as she looked so different from her picture after nearly a decade of cosmetic treatments…
Thankfully, after several hours of questioning, she managed to persuade the officers it was indeed her and they eventually let her on her flight home.
Joanne, who lives in Rossendale, Lancashire, with her partner of seven years and two children –Hudson, five, and Harrison, three –remembers, “I’d been in Turkey getting my teeth done. Iwas thrilled with them and was heading home, excited to show them off to my friends and family.
“But then I was stopped at the airport. It was so intimidating – the officers kept pointing at my picture then looking at me, saying, ‘It’s not you’. I kept telling them I’d had a lot of work done but they weren’t listening and took me off to a side room for questioning.”
SELF-CONSCIOUS
She adds, “I was terrified. I truly believed I was headed for prison. Eventually they let me through, but when I flew back to Manchester I had problems there too as the machine didn’t recognise my face. The man on passport control there told me I had to get a new one or it would keep happening. I ordered one with my updated pictures as soon as I got home!
“I couldn’t believe my dream appearance nearly led to me getting arrested. But I love how I look now, so it’s worth the stress.”
Joanne started her transformation when she was 18. She explains, “The first thing I had was a breast enlargement in the UK. I’d always felt self-conscious about my image, and I desperately wanted bigger boobs. I saved up and, for my 18th birthday, paid £2,500 for a breast enlargement, going from a 34B to a 34DD. Afterwards I felt amazing and much more confident.”
OUT OF HAND
After that Joanne started having more treatments. She particularly loved fillers and would get her lips and chin done every couple of months. She admits, “From the age of 20 to 23, I went crazy with fillers. Once every couple of months I’d slip off during my lunch break at the call centre where I was working and have more and more done. My partner would beg me to stop, saying it was getting out of hand. But at the time I couldn’t see it at all.”
