Do your chord sequences lack that extra touch. Or do you just need some fresh inspiration? Well, the SHLD MIDI Chord Pack might be what you’re looking for. Tell us a bit about yourself… Ludovic Drolez: I’ve been making music for almost 40 years, starting when I was about 10. A bit of piano, then a lot of guitar and drums. In 2020 I started buying different synthesisers and music software, because I wanted to compose and play independently, without the constraints of a band.

Why did you create the MIDI chord pack? LD: I wanted to help starting producers. You can get stuck in the production of a song, and starting with a known chord progression can sometimes unlock your inspiration. Around 2020, I noticed ads offering chord progressions for far too high a price. That’s when I decided it was time to make this project a reality and turn it into a collaborative project. I’ve spent a lot of time in the open source world; it seemed a natural choice.

Groovebox users are well catered for, too

How did you create it? LD: Being a computer geek, I immediately thought of creating a program that could generate a chord pack for me. I started with a Python script to generate all of the chords and progressions.

The script uses other free and open source projects like Chords2midi and Mingus. The chord progressions come from public lists, contributions and my current inspiration.

Now everyone can contribute to this pack on github.com.

Why should people not pay for MIDI chord packs? LD: 99% of possible chord progressions have been used since the beginning of music. The onefive-four-six progression has been used in hundreds of hits. I think it’s part of our heritage in a way, and this should be free.

What can people use this chord pack for?

LD: Well, the pack lets people: > Get instant inspiration listening to hundred of chord progressions. > Use complex chords that nobody else uses, without having to learn music theory. > You can begin with a classic chord progression like I-V-IV-VI and drag over it a few complex chords to stand out. > Use advanced chords to wr
