Double vision

Connecting a second screen to your PC so you can see more things at once can make you more productive, but to have a permanent setup of multiple monitors you need a lot of space. If you have a small desk or normally use the screen on your laptop as your main screen, you may not have the room for a second standard monitor. The answer is a portable screen, which is easy to get out and stash away as and when you need it.

As you might expect, the MSI Pro MP161 doesn’t offer the high quality we’re used to from the best monitors or laptop screens. It’s a six-bit panel that’s capable of producing 16.7 million colours. However, the result is a subdued picture, recreating only 57 per cent of the sRGB colour standard. It’s not the kind of screen you’d want to view photos on or watch films.

It’s reasonably bright, though, peaking at 296cd/m2 in our tests. However, at this level the contrast suffers, with lighter shades of grey appearing so blown out that they largely look white.

MSI makes no such sacrifices with the menu that helps you set up the screen. There are settings to control sharpness, low blue light, the response time (which has a maximum of 4 milliseconds) and even the company’s ‘Eye-Q’ features. These are designed to keep you working safely with reminders to regularly adjust your posture or check for eye-strain. The screen also has a highly effective anti-glare coating, to help visibility in exceptionally bright conditions.
