TIP OF THE FORTNIGHT

Search within books in Internet Archive

I was grateful for your feature highlighting the best content in the Internet Archive (https://archive. org), and pointing out what we’ll lose if the organisation has to take some of it down.

Readers may not appreciate just how advanced its search tools are, but they let you find content within books, TV shows and more. You can do this easily with books you borrow from Open Library (https://openlibrary.org), which is part of the Internet Archive.

This feature is particularly helpful when searching for references in a large book, such as Roy Jenkins’ biography of Winston Churchill, which is over a thousand pages long. If I type a search term into the box in the top left – Gallipoli in this case ( 1 in screenshot right) – and press Enter, I can see all references to ‘Gallipoli’ in blue down the left 2 and along the bottom 3 . It even provides page numbers.

I can then scroll through the entries to find a passage I want to read, and click one to go to that page. It couldn’t be easier!

SOFTWARE Add extra fields to Data Crow’s modules

Thanks for your ‘How To’ on using Data Crow (https://datacrow.org) to catalogue your collections (Issue 668, page 35). I’d been looking for a cataloguing tool to help me organise my sprawling CD, DVD and book collection, and Data Crow does the job nicely.

After playing around with the program, I found a clever way to add new category fields to your modules, giving greater control over your cataloguing. First, select the module you want to amend – do this by clicking the relevant icon at the top. Then click Modules, followed by After Module Wizard. Now select a category, such as Actors or Composer.

Change the module’s icon if you wish, then click Next followed by Add Field ( 1 in our screenshot below left). Now type the name of your new field 2 and decide how to select it (I like checkboxes because they’re easy to click 3 ). Finally, click OK, and Data Crow will add your field in the section at the bottom.

ONLINE TV Watch European channel Arte.tv

I enjoyed Issue 668’s Cover Feature on free online TV – it gave me lots of new ideas. But I was surprised to see that you didn’t include Arte.tv (www. arte.tv, pictured above right), which is a European channel dedicated to showing films, music, interviews, documentaries and news. It doesn’t have adverts a
