Synology has been making network-attached storage (NAS) drives for years, but while these devices are easy to set up and have superb user interfaces, they can do a whole host of complicated tasks that many people probably don’t need.

The BeeStation is a simpler network-attached drive, closer in function to the Synology BeeDrive backup SSD that we reviewed in Issue 678 (£130 from www. snipca.com/49238). While the BeeDrive is a portable unit that’s small enough to carry around in your pocket, the BeeStation stays at home.

can also share your files over your home network and online via the ‘cloud’, meaning you can access your files and collection of personal photos from anywhere on any device. This lets you avoid having to pay a subscription to store them on online-storage services such as Google Drive and Google Photos.

There are a few key differences between this model and previous Synology offerings. First, it comes with a 4TB hard drive installed – previously most Synology NAS drives required you to buy and fit your own, which isn’t a difficult process but may have put some off.
