First, a little anatomy lesson: each one of your hair strands is made up of tiny bonds that are largely responsible for its shape, strength and shine. Chemical processing and frequent heat styling can damage these bonds, leading to just about every annoying hair issue, from colour fading to split ends to hair thinning.

That’s why bond-building haircare is so very necessary. The exact science varies from product to product, but in general, most formulas penetrate the hair shaft to repair broken bonds by either replacing lost protein with amino acids or using acids to alter your hair’s pH, says trichologist and The Inkey List brand ambassador Shab Reslan.

‘My clients who use bonding products have hair that better retains moisture, so there’s less frizz and breakage – plus, their colour looks more vibrant and stays that way for longer, too,’ adds celebrity colourist and Matrix brand ambassador Rachel Bodt.

TL;DR: this is a relatively simple way to get healthier, easier-to-style hair. And because so many product options are out there right now, there are a ton of different ways – from pre-washes to leave-ins – you can get in on the goodness, starting with these standouts.
