DESIGNER OF THE MONTH

The designer made her name crafting beautiful decorations for Christmas – and this festive season sees her celebrate 40 years in business

Forty years ago, German-born Gisela began making wooden Christmas decorations at her kitchen table. Her unique style charmed customers from the beginning, and she’s been the leading lady of Christmas ever since. As well as creating her own collections, Gisela supplies UK and European department and high-street stores with everything you could possibly need to create a magical festive feel in your home, from baubles and fairy lights to snow globes and wreaths.

What inspires you?

Inspiration is one of those things that can strike you at any moment, so I try not to force it. In my experience, the best thing you can do is just keep your mind receptive. Almost every day something catches my eye, from a picture in amuseum to a reflection in puddles in Central London. I carry a notebook with me wherever Igo to jot down little reminders so they’re ready when it comes to designing.

What are the key Christmas trends for 2023?

Every year we’ll put anew twist on established favourites. So, for 2023,thatmeansWinterForestforfans of a frosty Christmas; a copper-tinted Woodland theme for those who love a forest story; and a Nordic take on the popular gingerbread theme, called Gingerbread Farm. I like to create something new, too, so this year we have Dellarobbia, a tribute to the renaissance Florentine family whose signature was garlands of fruit and flowers; and Floral Folk Art, inspired by the simple charm of traditional canal boat artists.

What’s your secret to success?

Being surrounded by resourceful people, from the top to the bottom, is what continues to inspire me on a daily basis. They keep everything we do feeling personal and special.

What’s next?

My business and personal goals blend well together for the next five years. One of my sons, Andreas, has recently taken over the reins of chairman from his late father. I’m excited to see how his vision further expands the business, but I’m also over the moon to be spending a lot more time in his company. It’s going to be a rewarding time, both personally and professionally.

Any words of wisdom?

Whatever you’re trying to achieve – believe. Believe in yourself; in those around you; and in the possibility that most things eventually work out if you’re prepared to put the effort in.
