BATHROOM STORIES

These bathroom makeovers transformed the homes – and lives –of their owners, upgrading shower rooms, providing space for families, and bringing luxe to leisure time

Knocking two rooms into one, Ripples designer Jo Sangster combined style and practicality to design a spacious retreat for homeowner Philippa Ross

THE START

When style influencer Philippa Ross (@philippabloom) wanted anew family bathroom, she commissioned Jo Sangster, senior designer at Ripples London, to mastermind the project. Philippa’s three-word wish list? ‘Luxe, practical and hotel-esque.’

THE BUILD

The existing bathroom featured a bath, basin and airing cupboard in one room, and WC in another. ‘With a young family, the challenge was to create aspace that would be perfect for busy mornings, but which also provided aplace for relaxation and retreat,’ explains Jo. ‘The first stage was to re-imagine the two rooms as one.’ So down came the dividing wall to make one larger room, with space for both ashower and bath.

THE LAYOUT

The vanity unit and mirror create an attractive focal point on entering the room, flanked on one side by the elegant freestanding bath, with the shower on the other to make the best possible use of an alcove. The WC is hung on the wall in the corner behind the door, its cistern concealed for an unobtrusive finish.

THE LOOK

‘Philippa wanted acalm, minimalist space to match the aesthetic she was creating throughout the rest of her home,’ says Jo. ‘She loved the idea of gold and brass tones mixed with marble tiles and had saved many images as the starting point to inspire the look.’ The blend of soft, neutral colours creates arestful backdrop, with interest added by including different shapes of tiles cut from the same marble, fluted glass lights and jewel-like metal accents.

‘I love the whole aesthetic of the bathroom,’ says Philippa, ‘but it’s the little details, like the brushed brass, that add the extra touch of luxe.’
