All THINGS WHITE & BEAUTIFUL

A palette of soft whites sets off a carefully curated collection of vintage pieces in an 18th-centur y farmhouse in the Nor thumbrian countr yside

THE EXTERIOR The farmhouse in snow – a stone’s throw from Hadrian’s Wall, the winters can be bitterly cold. A dry-stone wall encloses a formal garden from the surrounding plots and meadows. The windows are painted in Mouse’s Back, an earthy grey/brown by Farrow & Ball

THE KITCHEN “I like to call the interior of the house Georgian vicarage chic,” says Julie with a smile. “I loved the kitchen, with its flagstone floor, panelled walls and beams. We could instantly see the potential”
THE HALL New flags were laid, carefully matched to the originals in the kitchen. Installing a new heating system under the flags was one of the first priorities when they moved to the house – happily, solar panelling, added by the previous owner, offsets the heating costs. The north-facing pantry (which leads off here), with walls in Pigeon by Farrow & Ball, has a slatted window, allowing air to circulate
THE LIVING/DINING ROOM A distressed painted Hungarian vintage settle creates a part divider between the sitting area and kitchen/dining room. The cushions are made from Indian ticking and came from RE in Corbridge
THE GARDEN Clipped yew cones, hedges and balls lend formality to the beds and borders in the walled garden, bordered on one side by a rushing Victorian channel that supplies Newcastle with water from the nearby reservoir

THE LIVING ROOM Most of the downstairs walls were painted with Wickes trade emulsion in an ivory shade but here the fireplace wall is in Light Gray and the panelling in Clunch, both by Farrow & Ball. As the ground-floor ceilings are low, the whitened beams help the room look more spacious. The handmade rug came from an antiques fair, while the horse weather vane is a nod to the stables next door; the upholstered furniture came from Duresta, and the pendant light and table lamp are from The Lampologist
THE KITCHEN Julie worked with well-made wooden cabinets from the previous owner and repainted them in Mouse’s Back by Farrow & Ball. The island is an old dairy cupboard painted in Graphite wood paint by Annie Sloan. A splash of colour is provided by the 1950s coffee grinder. Unframed antique portraits line the walls above a Victorian baking table
