LETTER OF THE MONTH

On top of the world

Rarely has a summit meant so much to so many.

As a teenager growing up in South London in the early 1970s I was lucky enough to go on school trips to North Wales for a week at a time, being introduced to rock climbing, canoeing and hiking. I fell in love with Snowdonia and told myself I would return and climb to the summit of Snowdon (as it was then known). Then life happened.

I joined the Women’s Royal Air Force and after 23 years settled in Wiltshire. I retired from driving public transport around Swindon 18 months ago, but through it all I never lost my desire to climb Yr Wyddfa.

I love retirement, which has given me the freedom to go walking anywhere at any time. I’ve enjoyed walking on the Pennine Way near Stoodley Pike and went up Pen-y-ghent with a friend last year. The Ridgeway is always available to me, but on 24 May on my 67th birthday, and after half a century, I finally fulfilled my dream and climbed to the summit of Yr Wyddfa!

I went up on the Pyg Track and the day was gloriously clear and sunny. I met some lovely people on the way up (including two Snowdon Rangers) and reached the summit at noon.

The view was spectacular and I’m still buzzing. I realise how blessed I was to have a clear day. I am so thrilled to have achieved my dream that I wanted to share it far and wide and also to say to everyone, never give up on your dreams and age is just a number!

A very full moon

I very much enjoyed the feature on embarrassing moments. It reminded me of my own on a walk. I was desperate for a pee, when suddenly I saw a public toilet a short distance ahead.

I rushed forward - only to find the gents’ was locked. So I decided to satisfy my urge by going to the back of the building. Only to find a row of bare bottoms! I obviously hadn’t considered that the ladies’ loo might also be locked!

Important news about a hot Topic

I’m an avid reader, and I noticed Guy mentioned in last month’s editorial that he missed Topic chocolate bars, which went out of production last year. I do too! But I have good news. ‘Topics’, under the Israeli name “Egozi” are still made in Israel and are usually sold in the UK at Kosher Kingdom in Golders Green, North London. Otherwise you c
