Buying Guide Mid-layers

OUR TESTERS

Our reviewers Lara Dunn (LD), Nick Hallissey (NH) and Philip Thomas (PT) tested these jackets in a range of locations such as the Chilterns, the Malverns, the North Wessex Downs and the Lake District.

WHEN DID YOU last say the words, ‘pass me my mid-layer, would you, dearest’?

The answer is probably never, because ‘mid-layer’ is a word rarely used outside the outdoor manufacturing industry. It’s not even especially accurate, because for quite a lot of the year, the jackets you’re about to see could well be the only outer layer you need – ie. if it’s not sheeting down and/or deep-winter cold. But it is the catch-all phrase that covers the world of fleece and softshell jackets, as well as the ‘third way’ hybrids which combine elements of fleece, softshell and/or insulation too. The ‘mid’ part comes from the fact that can sit between baselayer and either a waterproof or insulator as part of a sophisticated and breathable layering system. So what you are far more likely to say is just ‘pass me that jacket I really love, dearest’ – or even nothing at all, because you’re already wearing it, thanks to its warmth and adaptability. (I’m wearing one in the house as I type [says Nick] because it’s cosier than a jumper and cheaper than the central heating.) So yes, the name ‘mid-layer’ is only accurate for about 20% of the year. But does that matter? Not when a product is this exciting, clever and important, nope. So choose with confidence, and wear with joy.

About our reviews

We’ve chosen 12 jackets which should be widely available in stores and online as this issue goes on sale. Most are available in men’s and women’s versions (denoted by these dots ). We rate each jacket for comfort, versatility, features and value for money.

We don’t pick an overall ‘winner’ as the jackets are very different and no single option will suit every walker, but we have selected two Tester’s Choice options based on our findings, and one that offers the best value for money.

SOFTSHELL JACKETS

REGATTA Connie V

RRP: £50 Target price: £25

Even at full price, the Connie (men’s Cera) is a good option for the budgetconscious walker. It’s available in sizes up to a 26 (but surprisingly only down to an 8) and in a whopping 12 colours, so it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser. The mid-weight softshell fabric has a lovely soft fleecy back to it, which makes it super-cosy on the go and doesn’t
