The walk home hits home

Thank you to Nick Hallissey for the beautiful article ‘The Walk Home’, and for introducing us to his dear parents. I’m quite in bits. It’s so full of love, for them and for what they introduced you to, for their long lives and for the beautiful countryside you enjoyed on that walk. And The Snowman in the same issue! What a treat! What a year Nick has had (and the knee surgery too). I am sorry for his loss. Thank you for the lovely writing, and Tom Bailey’s photos were great too.

I’m so pleased that you ‘commandeered six pages’ of CW, Nick. ’Appen it’ll brighten up yet was a fabulous piece of writing: warm, heartfelt and touching. I’d also forgotten just how good Stanley Holloway’s lyrics were! Thank you.

Just wanted to recognise Nick Hallissey’s beautifully written piece on his mum and dad. It brought tears to my eyes. I’ve been walking for decades and have treasured memories of walking in beautiful places – some remote, some epic, some just slogging across a ploughed field in the rain – with loved ones. It is all a treasure chest of delights.

Many thanks for a cracking edition – and particular thanks to Nick for his piece ‘The Walk Home’: inspiring, poignant and beautifully written.

Beautifully told, beautifully illustrated, incredibly poignant. My dad got me into walking too; he is now 90 and there are many memories... I’m so grateful you were able to write this piece.

I moved to the Isle of Wight in 1991 and live about a mile from Quarr Abbey, so it’s a place I walk a lot. What are the chances of an article about both and in the same issue? I have now promised myself to return to the folly for a walk in 2024.

A random question

Just received my copy of Country Walking for January 2024 and it seems to be full of walks, ideas and articles that all speak to me. It’s like ‘here you go Paul, 2024 is going to be your walking year!’ I am definitely attempting the 1000 miles challenge and venturing out to new locations. But I’ve also got a random request about the fantastic article on Viking Britain that really interests me: what is the heading in the red font that’s so eye-catching? I fancy recording an account of my walks and writing them up in a book in the style of The Wayfarers’ Journal by John Lloyd and Pat Sellers, truly an inspiring book. Thanks for a great mag!

Ed says: Paul, we are all for random requests so keep them coming. That font is called ‘
