WALKING 1000 MILES sounds like an all-consuming, Herculean task that most probably requires time off work, the sacrificing of relationships, maniacal focus, hardship and endurance. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Walking 1000 miles in 12 months requires the habit of walking 2.74 miles – or a little under an hour – a day for a year. That doesn’t take over your life – what it does is build a fantastic platform for the whole rest of your life. A healthier body, a livelier mind, an imagination fizzing with ideas of what might lie round the next corner in the landscape and in life; a readiness to be contented by life’s simplest pleasures, a quietude of mind and an eye in the habit of roaming the horizon and finding proper perspective, not perpetual problems; a memory-bank stuffed with daily surprises and satisfactions, not marking time waiting for the day we go on holiday/retire/pay off the mortgage. Life is better tucked into rather than saved for later, and neither your body nor the world respond to anything like mutual discovery on foot. So come on – walk 1000 miles with us, so you can turn dull days and dead time into gold, so you can eat more cake and drink more of what you fancy, discover more of what you’re capable of and find out what an amazing doctor, philosopher and bon viveur you have within you, when you just let your body do what it’s spent thousands of years evolving to do.
