AFEW YEARS BACK I climbed Snowdon by night, armed with a decent head torch. It was one of the greatest walks of my life. It was exhilarating, seeing the dark outlines of the surrounding mountains forming around me. I loved switching from the bright light needed for close-up tricky bits to the reds and greens that, after a few minutes, made me feel like an animal – closer to nature, more immersed in the experience of seeing what the mountains do when the crowds go home. But the best bit was looking round, high up on Bwlch Main, and seeing torchlight on every surrounding peak from Mynydd Mawr to Moel Siabod. Each hill had at least one soul on it with the same drive to explore the world by night. It was magical. But it doesn’t have to be a mountain: a head torch is just as transformative in a field or a wood; even more so in a cave. For these reasons, this has been one of my favourite tests of the past 12 months. I hope one of these will unlock the same kind of magic for you.

About our reviews

We’ve chosen seven head torches from across the market, but focusing on products which are ideal for walking rather than more intensive activities like running and cycling. All of them offer at least two white light options, and all but one have a red light for better night vision. Each one is rated for features, brightness, battery life and comfort. We don’t pick an overall winner as the products cater for different demands, but Nick has chosen a personal favourite and a best-value option.
