I wanted to tell you what your magazine has done for me since I started my subscription a few months ago. What an eye opener it was! Following the arrival of the first magazine I signed up to the 1000-mile challenge, and now have 400 miles under my belt. I have the calendar for the coming year, and have bought one for my son-in-law who is taking on a charity trek later in the year.

Following a link in Country Walking I visited the Ordnance Survey site, and bought personalised maps as Christmas presents for friends – easy to post, and good for finding those local routes that you didn’t realise were there. I’ve one myself too and am trying to walk all the footpaths in my locality – marking each one as I complete it!

The second edition promoted the YHA Festival of Walking. I signed up for a day of Nordic Walking around Bristol. Never having done it before, I loved it, and its health benefits. Fellow walkers also told me about their membership of YHA and what it offered, and on the train journey home I joined, and promptly also signed up for a further Nordic Walking course.

In November I qualified as a British Nordic Walking instructor, after an intensive assessment weekend back in Bristol. At the end of December I met with another retired friend to plan a walking week next year. Originally we’d thought of walking the Two Moors Way Coast to Coast, but again inspired by an article in CW we’ve now decided to start with Hadrian’s Wall – a more accessible and frequently trod route, and my YHA membership should come in handy!

So, as you can see, my few months of subscription, to date, have had quite an impact – and not just on me. Needless to say I’ve extended my subscription. And I look forward to more walking in 2024 – what a great way to start the year, and what a fabulous magazine!

A BERGHAUS WATERPROOF JACKET FOR LESLEY!

The letter of the month wins a Berghaus waterproof jacket worth (£225). The Cornice (men’s) and Glissade (women’s) jackets have been firm favourites with walkers for decades, are superb quality and always score highly in Country Walking gear tests. www.berghaus.com

Death, taxes, and…

Well after years of trouble-free walking it had to happen. I’ve developed a bunion (only small at the moment) and I’m after advice and any experience our readers have with dealing with the little blighters.

Ed says: Known as hallux valgus, bunions involve the big toe moving position so it points inwards towards the second toe. It’s basically osteoarthritis of the big toe joint and can cause incredible pain if you try to ben
