SOUTH EAST

This linear route covers one of the most varied and attractive sections of the South Downs Way, combining a ridge-top stretch over open grassy downland with a lovely walk along the gentle Cuckmere valley.
A climb through Friston Forest leads to a fine view over the famous meanders before the descent to Exceat where you could finish the walk, taking a bus ride into Seaford.
The full-length walk continues down the west side of the valley to Cuckmere Haven and the Coastguard Cottages, for a superb view of the Seven Sisters.
The final leg is along clifftop to Seaford.
1 Start
From platform 2 side of railway station follow lane for short distance, soon turning R (or keep ahead for café) and crossing A26 by bridge. Continue up track on other side which curves R then L up to top of Itford Hill (for short cut, climb straight up).
Fine views back over Ouse valley below and, as you continue on grassy ridge towards radio station masts on Beddingham Hill, enjoy views over the Weald.
Beyond masts, go through car park, and further on reach high point of ridge – Firle Beacon (217m).

Route goes gently downhill to another car park. If misty, take care to carry on in same direction beyond Bostal Hill where another bridleway veers off to R. Long, gentle descent to reach junction of tracks just before some scrub. Diagonally R across track is Long Burgh, one of largest long barrows in Sussex (see info panel). Keep ahead and carry on down to Alfriston High Street.
