Now that you’ve read Bethan’s iris folding story, it’s time to give it a go for yourself. At first glance, this project might look complicated, but never fear, Bethan has designed this easy-to-follow template for complete newbies. And guess what? You can make it using supplies you’ll already have laying around at home!

One sheet of A5 card One sheet of A5 plain paper Coloured paper: one dark green, one light green, three pink and red One small piece shiny card Adhesives: sticky tape, double-sided tape, Blu Tack

1 Using the template provided on the pattern pages, cut along the dashed lines to cut out the iris folding pattern, card template, and pattern guide. With your A5 piece of card landscape, lay the template on top of your card, lining up the edges of card and template. Using a blunt pencil, trace the bold outline of the watermelon slice (press down hard). This should leave a score line on the card below. Remove the template from the card.

2 Place your A5 piece of card on top of a cutting mat. Then, following your score line, use your craft knife to cut out the watermelon shape. You should now have a watermelon card aperture. Place a couple of bits of Blu Tack on the reverse side of the watermelon iris folding pattern and gently secure to the table. Next, place your watermelon card aperture over the iris folding pattern and secure in place with Blu Tack. Your watermelon shape should be on the left-hand side of the card.

3 Gather your five papers, and cut two long narrow strips of each paper, approximately 2cm wide. Fold each strip over lengthwise to make a long border roughly 7mm wide.
