Aiden Fucci was sentenced to life behind bars in March for the murder of 13-year-old cheerleader Tristyn Bailey. The 16 year old had stabbed his friend and classmate 114 times as they walked through a quiet neighbourhood in St Johns, Florida, in 2021, in a murder that shocked the community.

Tristyn’s body was found in a remote wooded area on 9 May, hours after she had been reported missing by her family. The “energetic and happy” teenager had been stabbed in the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back – 49 of her wounds on her hands and arms were described as “defensive” by the medical examiner, who said the teen had “fought for her life”. Fucci, a fellow student at Patriot Oaks Academy, was arrested after he was seen walking with Tristyn on CCTV footage. The callous killer, who shared a Snapchat photo asking if anyone had seen Tristyn on the day of his arrest, pleaded guilty in February. Despite his age, he was charged as an adult, due to the nature of the crime.

As he handed down the sentence, Judge R Lee Smith called Tristyn’s killing “one of the most difficult and shocking cases” of his 16-year career. He said that there was a “heightened level” of premeditation, and that Fucci was the “sole participant” in the “devastating crime”. “Tristyn Bailey was conscious, she was aware, and she was doing everything she could to fend off this attack. She suffered a painful, horrifying death from someone that she trusted,” he said. He also commented that the “extraordinary crime had no motive”, adding, “This was not done out of greed, it was not done in retaliation, retribution or revenge, it was not a crime of passion, it was not a crime that was committed because he felt rejected by her, it was not done in a fit of uncontrol
