It was like a scene from a horror movie.
When police descended on aremote woodland cabin in Wilseyville, California, they could have no idea of the depravity soon to unfold. MISSING
On 2November 1984, San Francisco car dealer Paul Cosner, 40, didn’t make it to a planned date night with his girlfriend Marilyn Namba. She called Paul’s sister Sharon to see if she knew where he was, but she hadn’t heard from him, either. While not yet overly concerned, there was afaint alarm bell ringing as the day before, Paul had been due to meet aman at his flat, who had answered an ad in the San Francisco Chronicle to buy Paul’s brown Honda Prelude.
The women kept calling Paul, but when they received no answer, they went to his home. What they saw when they went in alarmed them –the place was spotless, as if it had been recently cleaned, and that wasn’t like Paul at all. The car he was selling was also missing. They called the police, only to be told Paul would come back when he was ready and they didn’t have the resources to investigate an adult disappearance. Sharon, however, knew in her heart that something was not right. She kept visiting her brother’s home, and seven days after he went missing, there was anew message on the answerphone. It would be the most chilling recording she had ever heard as aman’s voice simply said, “Paul is gonna be dead.”
She immediately called the police and, while investigators took on the case, they had nothing to go on. It seemed hopeless, but Sharon did manage to get local news stations to appeal for information, and it was a reporter who told her that afew months earlier, in July, Harvey Dubs, his wife Deborah and their baby Sean had gone missing right after Harvey had placed an ad in the same paper, renting out his video equipment. Aneighbour reported she had seen two men carrying the equipment out of the Dubs’ home, putting it into the Dubs’ car and driving away. Alittle while later, the family bank card was used in arestaurant, and workers told police the diners had been awhite man and woman, and an Asian man. Alittle while later, the Dubs’ car was found abandoned, and it was feared something had happened to them.
But it wouldn’t be until months after Paul went missing that police would get the break that led them into the very heart of darkness.
