On Wednesday 3January, Christopher Preciado, 19, was charged with capital murder over the shooting of pregnant teenager Savanah Soto and her boyfriend, Matthew Guerra, in San Antonio, Texas. Preciado’s father Ramon was also charged with abuse of acorpse, as it is alleged he helped his son move the bodies and cover up the crime. Aweek later, Myrta Romanos, 47, who lived with the father and son, was arrested for abuse of acorpse, tampering with evidence, and altering, destroying or concealing ahuman corpse.

Savanah, 18, and Matthew, 22, were killed on 21 December 2023, and their bodies were discovered in aparked car five days later. Both had been shot in the head. Savanah’s pregnancy was full-term and it was when she failed to show up to be induced on 23 December that the authorities were alerted to her disappearance. Police believe the couple died in a “narcotics deal gone bad”, and Christopher has admitted the killings, but claims he acted in self-defence. His arrest affidavit states Savanah and Matthew drove to his home to sell him marijuana, but at some point, Matthew produced agun. Christopher claims he then struggled with Matthew to get hold of the weapon and the fatal shots were fired accidentally. However, investigators have cast doubt on his story as both victims suffered head wounds. It’s alleged that Ramon then helped his teenage son cover up the crime.
