AN INNOCENT DATE TURNED INTO MURDER
In 2012, Dave Kroupa was single and ready to meet someone. Having split from Amy Flora, the mother of his two young children, the car mechanic had moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to be near his kids.“I had no idea what was waiting for me,” he would later say.
He soon clicked with single mum and animal lover Shanna “Liz” Golyar on adating website. “Liz seemed very cool, very down to earth,” Dave says in Netflix documentary Lover, Stalker, Killer. Their initial date went well. But, despite their connection, Dave made it clear to Liz that he didn’t want to be tied down, which she seemed to accept.
Not long after, Dave met Cari Farver when she came into his auto shop to get her car repaired and they hit it off. “Her energy and drive marked her out from the other women Ihad met. She was smart and sexy, not in my league,” Dave said. Still, he braved it and asked her out. They hit it off immediately and went back to Dave’s apartment, only for things to turn awkward when Liz came round unannounced.
Dave and Cari got closer, and she often stayed over at his place. After one such occasion, on 12 November 2012, Dave said goodbye, not realising it would be the last time he saw her. “That day would change my life forever,” he recalls. Later, at work, he received amessage from Cari suggesting they move in together. This was ashock to Dave, as they had only been seeing each for two weeks, and he refused. He was not prepared for what happened next. He was met with abarrage of angry texts, before Cari angrily said she never wanted to see him again.
“I felt kinda sad that it didn’t work out, but Itried to get on with my life,” Dave said. But Cari was seemingly not done.
STALKER
Soon after, Dave began receiving abusive messages from Cari. “Your life will be ruined for ruining mine” one read. “I’m going to destroy the things you care about”, she said in another, and chillingly, “I hate you so much. I want to drive a knife into your heart.” Dave was bombarded with hundreds of texts, all coming from different aliases and numbers. “The messages started slowly, but they ramped up. They became meaner, ruder and more threatening as time went on,” Dave says in the docu.
Worse still, Liz said she was also being harassed by Cari. Her car had been keyed, her house broken into and “Whore” spray-painted on the wall, and her clothes were slashed. “Cari was clearly jealous of Liz.
