Create a classic: delft tile wall hanging

2 min read

Decorate your home with traditional Delft tiles without having to do any DIY – our wall hanging is a stunning symphony of stitching in blue

PART 1

Welcome to our latest project that’s a bit more challenging. Start the first part of our Delft Tiles design and then next issue complete it as a wall hanging for your home. It will add instant classic style wherever you hang it – and is perfect for the kitchen if you’ve always longed for Delftware, as this is the next best thing! Enjoy beads, blending and backstitch in this beautiful design.

Make a… wall hanger

Step 1

MAKE three hanging loops out of the cotton fabric. Fold each one in half lengthways bringing the raw edges together. Stitch down the seam. Trim off the excess and turn through to the right side. Press, with the seam at the centre back. Fold each one in half bringing the raw edges together.

Step 2

PLACE your aida right-sides together with your backing fabric. Place on a flat surface and smooth out any creases. Pin the layers together.

Step 3

PLACE the hanging loops equally spaced across the top of the stitching. The folded ends needs to be inside the layers, with the cut ends outside the seam allowance line. Pin in place and then tack the layers together. Cut away some of the excess fabric outside the seam allowance to make it less bulky and easier to stitch.

Step 4

PLACE the back of the cross stitching facing upwards, and leaving 2cm (¾in) of unstitched aida around the stitching, stitch around the design leaving a gap at the bottom for turning.

Step 5

CUT away the excess seam allowance leaving about 1.25cm (½in). Press, then turn to the right side and press again. Your hangers should have turned through and will now be along the top edge of your finished wall hanger. Fold in the open end of the wall hanging, and catch stitch closed. Use a cane or pole to hang your wall hanging.
