We’ve challenged three designers to use only the materials given to them to create a pretty brooch for Valentine’s Day… Read on to see how they got on…

Valentine’s Day is ultimately a celebration of love, and what better way to wear your ‘love of love’ with pride than a special brooch? We asked our three designers this month to come up with a brooch for Valentine’s Day. Our designers could only use the seven shades of stranded cotton stipulated and make sure that their design was worked on plastic aida, to be fitted with a brooch back. Take a look at their sweet results below – we’ve featured a chart for each one so you can stitch your favourite! We hope this will inspire you to join in too – turn the page to see what our challenge will be for April – we’ve listed everything you need to take part.

THE CHALLENGE

• 14 count white plastic aida

• 7 shades of DMC stranded cotton (shown above)

• Brooch back, 25mm

THE RULES

• Create a Valentine’s brooch

• The design should be no larger than 45 x 45 stitches

• Only the materials above can be used

• Be creative as possible!

MARIA DIAZ… HEART TATTOO

Personally I love tattoo art and when you think Valentine’s, you think Hearts! (Well, I think chocolates but they weren’t in this colour palette!) S o I have gone for a very pretty version of an Old School’ heart I could wear. Happy stitching!”

CHERYL MCKINNON… BEAR HUG

This sweet little bear has a Valentine’s wish for you or your loved ones. He can work as a brooch or a greeting card, and if you want a quicker stitch, try omitting the heart background.”

AMANDA BUTLER… I LOVE YOU

I must have started this design four times before I was happy with it – sometimes small designs can be a little more tricky to do than the larger ones. Hopefully, I have managed to achieve a balance between the traditional Valentine's theme and a modern style.”
