Ready, steady, stich!

2 min read

We’ve challenged three designers to use only the materials given to them to create a stitchable bracelet to wear over spring and summer…

Festival season is just around the corner, so why not accessorise accordingly with a hand-stitched bracelet? In preparation we asked our three designers this month to come up with a design for a leather-effect bracelet that is ready to stitch. The designers, as usual, could only use the seven shades of stranded cotton we gave them, and they had to work with a black cuff bracelet which features a stitchable area. Take a look at their colourful results below – we’ve featured a chart for each one so you can stitch your favourite! We hope this will inspire you to join in too – turn the page to see what our challenge will be for June – we’ve listed everything you need to take part.

THE CHALLENGE

• Black cuff bracelet with a perforated area

• 7 shades of DMC stranded cotton (shown above)

THE RULES

• Create a bracelet design

• The design should be no larger than 46 x 9 stitches

• Only the materials above can be used

• Be creative as possible!

MARIA DIAZ… INSPIRE LOVE

It’s quite difficult to get motifs to work on such a small stitch area. I was pondering what one would want on a bracelet, and this is the time of year for optimism as the days get warmer and long. So I thought some words to uplift and INSPIRE LOVE was the upshot of my hunt for perfect festival wear. Roll on summer!”

CHERYL MCKINNON… TULIP TILES

The bright colours were fun to work with! Since this is for a bracelet, I wanted to create a repeating design that wasn’t boring. The design is reminiscent of geometric tiles, and the tulips add a pretty touch.”

DURENE JONES… LOVELY LADYBIRDS

As soon as I saw the colours for this Ready, Steady, Stitch commission, I thought of ladybirds and knew I wanted to fit some of them in if I possibly could. Luckily, I did manage to fit them in and some little flowers for them to sit among, too, and I think it makes a perfectly cheery bracelet design, which I hope you like too.”
