My training space simon collins

My old training space [featured in CW, 15 September 2022] was in the spare room. Since then, I’ve moved house and now I’m training in the garage. However, it’s no longer just a turbo in the corner with loads of boxes and stuff – I’ve spent the time to make it look nice, to encourage me to go out there.

The bike training studio is at the back of the garage; the front has a lifting platform, squat rack,rowers... My partner is a personal trainer, so she helps with all my strength and conditioning.

I’m doing 15-18 hours of training a week with guidance from Crown Cycle Coaching, whose dedicated coach Kyle Bateman sets my programme. We’ve built my engine over the winter and now I’m tailoring the top end. I’m also doing week ly Zwift races as part of my training. I’m just about to start the racing season with a new six-rider-strong team, League of Swindon Cycles. We’ll be doing the Cotswold Road Race League and the Oxfordshire Road Race League plus crits at Thruxton, Castle Combe and Abingdon – a mixture throughout the year.

As well as the racing, I like to set myself a challenge each year. I’ve done Chase the Sun [coast to coast on the longest day of the year]; and I’ve qualified to ride for GB twice at the UCI Gran Fondo Worlds. Indoor Everesting was another challenge. For this year, maybe an outdoor Everesting abroad, as I’ve never cycled abroad. For now, I’m always in the garage!
