Build and handling

Despite weighing just 135g, the build quality is convincing. The Nikon is made from plastic, right down to its mounting plate, and is only 40mm long. The DX 24mm has a stepping motor-based autofocus system which is quick for stills and delivers near-silent autofocus transitions for shooting video.

There are no physical switches on the lens barrel, so swapping between focus modes means dipping into the camera’s menu. The lens isn’t fully weather-sealed but has a rubber weather-seal ring around its mounting plate. It comes complete with a lens hood, a rarity for Nikon’s budget lenses.

Performance

Like most own-brand Nikon Z system lenses, the Z DX 24mm is impressive. Autofocus is quick and accurate and in our tests, centre-sharpness was pretty good even wide-open at f/1.7, and very good at f/2.8 at narrower apertures. Corner sharpness was lacklustre at f/1.7, but came on song at f/4.
