WINNER, TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2022

Matjaz Krivic, Slovenia Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Nanyuki, Kenya “Najin, one of the world’s last two remaining Northern White rhinos being caressed by her keeper Zachary Mutai in Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

“The northern white rhino is all but extinct – the two last males died several years ago. Two females still survive but, as they are too feeble to bear babies, their eggs are being artificially fertilised by sperm from the late males and kept at a temperature of -196°C in an Italian laboratory.

“The hope is that surrogates from another sub-species can bring the Northern White back from the brink.” Captured on a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EF 100mm f/2.8L lens, 1/400 sec at f/7.1, ISO 100.

WINNER, YOUNG TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (15-18 YEARS)

Isabella Smith, USA (age 18) Athens, Greece “The slow and distinct movement of the Evzones soldiers after standing on guard at the Greek parliament for four hours serves an important purpose. A century ago, the belief was that if they moved too quickly after standing still for so long, they might collapse. Therefore, their initial movements are at a snail’s pace, kicking their legs up in perfect unison and then holding their feet still at the top of the manoeuvre before stamping their feet back down in a series of motions.

“These movements also offer a perfect opportunity to capture their unique shoes, which are striking with the large pompoms sitting on top.” Captured on a Canon EOS R6 and Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3; 1/640 sec at f/6.3, ISO 100.
