About the competition

Now in its 16th year, Landscape Photographer of the Year is one of the UK’s most prestigious photography competitions. The best entries appear in a book published by Ilex Press, priced £35/$40, and in an exhibition at several major railway stations across the UK. Find out more at: www.lpoty.co.uk

WINNER: CLASSIC VIEW ‘The Needle’ Julien Delaval “It’s a classic point of view, but this is an incredible place for sure. On this November morning, I decided to explore the entire area of the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye in Scotland and, of course, the famous needle was on my list.”
OVERALL WINNER & CHANGE IN THE LANDSCAPE WINNER: ‘After The Fire’ Mik Dogherty “After a large heath fire near Beaulieu in the New Forest National Park, I realised that to get a worthwhile picture, I would need a misty morning to hide the large oil refinery complex that sits on the edge of Southampton Water and which would be visible above the tree line in the background. Much like the cement works in the Peak District, the refinery can be seen from many parts of the New Forest. Eventually, that morning came – and to add to the ideal conditions, there was also a great sunrise. “Some months later, most of these burnt remnants of gorse bushes and the lone tree in the foreground have now gone (mostly devoured by the New Forest ponies and cattle). This picture no longer exists and so will not be repeated, but the regeneration has begun.”
Mik Dogherty
WINNER: BLACK & WHITE ‘Role reversal’ Nick Green Nick shot this well-photographed tree on Dartmoor, from an unusual point of view and then converted it to black and white.
Iain Masterton
WINNER: BIRD’S EYE VIEW ‘Lochan Eilein Castle’ Iain Masterton “This is an aerial view looking straight down on the ruined castle on an island in Loch an Eilein in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Taken in October 2022, I wanted to capture the autumn colours and the shape of the little island and the ruins so a Mavic Mini 3 Pro drone was perfect for the shot. A bonus was seeing the reflections of clouds in the still water of the loch.”

OVERALL YOUTH WINNER: ‘The Wishing Tree’ Aaron Northwood “Another day of work meant a day out with the camera up the local lanes.I saw this old oak on the horizon but the composition looked messy with a hedge and fence at the bottom of the scene. To get around this problem, I laid the camera in some snow on an old stump. I moved the camera so that the bottom of the lens was hidden in the snow hiding the messy foreground. I didn’t realise how well it worked until I got back, with the snow looking like fog below the tree.”

WINNER: EXPRESSIONS AND IMPRESSIONS OF THE LANDSCAPE ‘Blizzard, London SE9’ Terry Gibbins A three-image, in-came
