Newborns truly are one of life’s miracles – so delicate, so dependent and so photogenic. However, the sheer joy of shooting a week-old N baby is often tempered by the work that needs to go into editing their skin. While their skin might be soft, it’s often littered with red blotches and peeling areas. It’s safe to say that fixing baby skin brings fear to those starting out in newborn photography, but we’re here to help.

Lightroom Classic has a number of tools that can be used to speed up the process. For simple changes, local white balance controls can mitigate some of the issues and for more complex colour control, the Point Color tool can be used with masks and further refined. Mixing AI-generated masks lets you focus on fixing the colour, not having to paint tediously to define the face.

We’ll assume you’ve already pressed the Q key to bring up spot removal and done some work on the peeling skin – if not, this is covered in the video. Your next steps are to fix the facial skin and then the body skin. As well as redness, you can also add a little softening to help the newborn baby glow.
