Digital Camera readers show how they’ve been getting creative, submitting images across a range of genres

‘Storm the Castle’ by Lee Rouse 1 “The rapidly changing evening light meant I had to work quickly, taking multiple frames to stitch together using the shifting abilities of my tilt-shift lens. I opted for this approach to get a wider field of view, including all of the castle and its reflection, plus the impressive storm clouds that were being lit by the swiftly setting sun. There were multiple frames, all at 1/25 sec, f/11 and ISO 100.” Instagram: @ljrouse

Digital Camera says: The sun’s golden light illuminating the dark clouds before the storm brings this image to life. Using a tilt-shift lens has helped Lee get the wide view and perspective he was after.

2 ‘Kingston Flyer’ by James Chapman

“The Kingston Flyer is a restored vintage steam locomotive that runs excursions near Lake Wakatipu on New Zealand’s South Island. The locomotive and carriages were restored in 2017 and, since 2022, trains have made the 14km journey between Kingston and Fairlight every weekend from September to June each year. This photo was taken near a crossing on one of the first days following restoration.”

Digital Camera says: This image is pleasingly composed with both the train and the railway track leading through the photo. It’s also well-exposed, especially considering there is still plenty of detail on the black locomotive and the cloud of smoke against the clear blue sky is the finishing touch.

3 ‘Slater’s Bridge’ by Nick Bustin

“This shot of Slater’s Bridge near Little Langdale in the Lake District was taken the day after storm Debi had passed in November 2023. The sky still had a heavy grey colour and the river was fast-moving and very full. The wisps of mist added a ‘calm after the storm’ feel. I used my Sony A7R III with a 16-35mm F2.8 GM lens set at f/11, ISO 100 with +0.6EV exposure compensation.” Instagram: @nickbustin

Digital Camera says: There’s an almost retro quality to this grim and foreboding image but the toning gives it plenty of impact.

4 ‘Serpent’ by Rich Doak

“This was taken at Newton Wood in the North York Moors. I had photographed a wider panorama shot in this area but was drawn to the complementary shapes of the two old, gnarly oak trees. They just seemed to work really well with the moody conditions and spring colours that were starting to develop. Settings: 1/25 sec at f/8, ISO 250.” Instagram: @rich.doak.photography

Digital Camera says: This looks like a scene from the Lord of the Rings, with great character and atmosphere on a murky spring morning.

5 ‘Bird’s eye view, Torbay’ by Sam Evans

“This is a bird’s eye view of the Quay West water park in Torbay, Devon. This unusual view of the attraction showcases
