The legendary Coldcut are this issue’s cover stars. We’re long-time fans of Matt Black and Jonathan More and the opportunity for a chat about what looks like being a very busy year for the pair was too good to miss. We visit London’s most talked about new venue Spiritland and marvel at why, despite there being no dancefloor and no stage, people are flocking there just to listen to music. We meet Long Island siblings The Lemon Twigs, whose astonishing 4AD-released album blew our socks off late year, and rip up the NDAs to talk to the very excellent Jóhann Jóhannsson about his score for the ‘Blade Runner’ sequel, due later this year. We delve into the fascinating world of Moog salesmen extraordinaire, Beaver & Krause. We’ve a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the Nonesuch imprint from an excellent book ‘Becoming Elektra: The True Story of Jac Holzman’s Visionary Record Label’, as well as a brand-new interview with Dr Krause himself. We also met a guy called Daniel Wilson recently. He made a brilliant album called ‘Radionics Radio’. Radionics is bonkers, it’s a little-known electronic sound synthesis technique/alternative medicine that uses radio waves. Sort of. Anyway, Dan explains all and introduces us to the a 1962 Delawarr Multi-Oscillator, perhaps the weirdest synth ever made… In other news, we’ve got Together’s Suddi Raval on the incredible tale behind ‘Hardcore Uproar’, we flit back to San Francisco to meet psychedelic outfit Fifty Foot Hose and their amazing home-made instruments, while Adam Bryanbaum Wiltze from Stars Of The Lid/A Winged Victory For The Sullen reveals that he should’ve been a tennis pro.
