The brain’s ability to unlock memories with the mere sniff of a scent is not a new discovery, but I could give you a tour of my entire youth armed only with memories of certain smells. From the Jo Malone ‘Pomegranate Noir’ my mum wore, to the ‘Joop!’ and Lynx ‘Africa’ the boys in my school doused themselves in, via the very specific smell of the swimming pool I used to go to in Huddersfield, there are so many scent associations that are nostalgic for me.

I know I’m not alone. The reason we can pick up a new notebook and find ourselves travelling back through time to Year 9 maths is due to the brain’s anatomy and the fact that olfactory signals travel very quickly to the regions related to emotion and memory. One of my fondest happy memories to recreate is the fresh, salty air of Cornwall. When I’m sitting in London on a grey day, I love nothing more than for the house to smell as if I’m walking through a Cornish meadow.

I’ve always been keen on creating a mood and transforming a room using fragrance, and I think that when you’re renting it’s the quickest and easiest way to make a new place feel familiar. There’s nothing better than when you go to someone else’s house and it smells distinctly like them – Iam definitely the kind of person to ask you which fabric conditioner you use.

At Glassette, we recently worked with scent specialists Evermore London to create our own candle. Whether I’m on the slopes or walking through Epping Forest, the scent of trees is one of my favourites, yet I’ve always found it difficult to find something that gives you that special outdoorsy fragrance without smelling slightly manufactured. I think we’ve nailed it with this candle (called ‘Alpine’, of course). Now that the weather is warming up, it’s reminding me of the joy of being outside, in nature.
