The inspiration
A swirling mix of hedonism, art deco references and maximalist touches come together in this Parisian apartment, devised by French designers Jean-Michel Frank and Christian Bérard for Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé. Filled with opulent antiques, leather seats and moody artworks, the double-height living room is something of a Tardis – aworld away from Paris’s Rue de Babylone, which lies just outside the courtyard doors. Despite all the clamour, browns in shades from molasses to tan provide a unifying and comforting undercurrent. Meanwhile, wooden wall panelling enshrouds the room in an enveloping hug.
