The inspiration
If there’s one colour that defines the work of Verner Panton, it’s vibrant orange. The late Danish designer made the bold shade a hallmark of his interiors – seen at its best slathered all over the canteen of the former Spiegel publishing house in Hamburg (below). The building was completed in 1969, and each floor is clad in just one authoritative colour. In the now-listed canteen, a wall with groovy circular lights, a patterned floor and a tactile ceiling are the setting for orange versions of Knoll’s metal Bertoia chairs and round tables.
