The inspiration
British painter Meredith Frampton’s 1928 masterpiece Woman Reclining, a portrait of the model Marguerite Kelsey, encapsulates the cool allure of 1920s elegance. In a pared-back white dress (made by Frampton’s mother) and red shoes, the subject sits poised in front of the artist’s cleverly chosen autumnal colour palette – an ochre wall and a light-fawn curtain. In the almost neoclassical portrait, contrast is provided by the plump navy sofa, while white magnolia flowers are displayed in a rattan vessel. It’s a composition that feels at once of its time, but also timeless – ideal interiors inspiration.
